WILL A PURPLE BRAKE LIGHT FAIL AN MOT?
Name: Pro9 Town: Bury st edmunds

Q
I have recently bought a tail light for my motorcycle with integrated indicators, the indicators work great with orange LEDs, the running light is also fine with red LEDs. My only concern is the brake light, which when switched on emits a purple glow through the use of blue LEDs alongside the red running light. The company that provides this product says itís fine and there should not be any problems. Will I pass an MOT with bright purple brakes? Cheers
.
A
The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 states the brake light should be red.

Retest Failure on different item
    Name: Iain Town: Vlratcliffe1@aol.com

Q
Hello. I taken my motorcycle in to main motorcycle dealers for its mot the mot guy failed it on the headlight not in line .They could not do it as it was 10 min job but they was closing for the day and didnít have time saying (paper work. Time sheets to be filled in cleaning the work area ) they asked if I could bring it back the next day 40 mile round trip ( it ok itís a nice bike ride ) so I gets there the next day the 1st mot guy not there itís a.new guy so He does a full mot after he fixed the light .the said itís failed on the green neutral light on the clocks .now when you use the bike when itís cold it works when bike warms up the light works part time .as I just got there and he starts right away when the 1st mot guy let the bike cool down so it worked for him NOW the 2and mot guy says itís failed can they recheck the whole bike as I thought it would only be the item it failed on .also I had to pay a retest fee .which I think is disgusting as if I said the night before no fix the light I would have had no fee to pay and a new mot so me doing the 1st mot guy a favour I get screwed over . Can you advise me thank you Ian
A
I would steer clear of this MOT garage in the future. Technically they have done nothing wrong. The MOT tester tests the vehicle at the time and if something doesnít work he fails it, irrespectively to and previous tests. A retest should only test items relating to the original fail. Nominated testers (NTs) can remove failure items when theyíre repaired by selecting the ĎRepairedí button. So there was no need to redo the whole MOT test.

You can always complain if you think that the vehicle failed unfairly by clicking this link however they might say that the vehicle should have failed originally for the fault.
Daytime MOT

Q
Can I modify a bike from standard specification to meet daylight mot or remove indicators headlight rear light just leaving brake lights, horn
A
Yes but you must remove them. You can get a daytime MOT for bikes where you can only use the bike during daylight hours. A daylight MOT would require a motorbike to have a horn and a rear registration plate
Speedomter Illumination

Q
Hi,
My car recently passed its MOT and it passed even though my light warning light was on and the bulb for my speedometer needle was out so at night Iím unable to see what speed Iím doing ?? Can you let me know if this should have failed, surely itís health and safety?
A
For a car: The speedometer should be able to be illuminated at night to pass the MOT test. The tester may not have noticed but it should have failed. (Note: Motorbikes do not have to meet this requirement)
Trike hazard warning lights

Daytime MOT
    Name: Bill mill Town: billmill1954@gmail.com

Q
If a car is never used at night does it need headlights to pass mot
A
It would need the lights removed, permanently disconnected, painted over or masked. The MOT tester would issue a VT32 advisory notice recording the above.
Imported Vehicle
    Name: Alex Class Town: London

Q
I have an Italian Honda CTX700, that apparently Honda decided not to sell in UK. Iíve imported it from Italy when I came over here to live. Iíve been told that even if I change the headlight and speedo (to mph) the bike mightnít pass the MOT even after changing these parts to make it UK compliant. Could that be the case? I heard a US Harley never passed the test at my dealers workshop round the corner, after changing the parts, and the mechanics said bike was perfect. Apparently it never passed because the footrest was 1mm narrower than the UK version. In my case, if the bike isnít even sold here, could it be a problem? Just want to make sure that I do pass the test if I spend nearly a gran to get parts done.
A
The MOT test does not take into account the country of origin. It must pass all tests as a British vehicle whatever they may be. I cannot tell you what differences they may find without seeing the vehicle. To save yourself money I would put it in for an MOT test first and see what it fails on and then address those issues.
Moving Bike indicators
    Name: Matt Town: Lisburn

Q
Is it ok to remove the standard indicators on the front of my motorbike now that I have indicators on my mirrors or do I have to keep both? With my VTR being orange its not that easy to see the indicators which is why I got the mirrors, their much clearer for other to see.
A
There is no MOT advice on where the indicators are other than they must be visible and not in a position where the rider would obscure them. They must adhere to the indicator conditions of brightness and flash rate. ie
ē must show a light of the appropriate colour
ē must flash between 60 to 120 times per minute
ē cannot affect the operation of another lamp

Car Insurance
    Name: Janet Town: BECKENHAM

Q
My MOT failed on two accounts: 1 the windscreen needs replacing, 2 the garage needs to repair a head light. I arranged for wind screen to be replaced at my house - the company has rearranged it as heavy rain prevented them from doing the work. They cannot replace the windscreen now until after I have had the repair done at the garage. The problem is my insurance will have then expired and I donít think I can insure it without a valid MOT. This means I will have to drive it to the garage without a valid MOT and with out a valid insurance. What can i do - if stopped and asked for a document check am I covered. On reflection this means I will have to drive it to the garage for the repair, them bring it home to have the windscreen repaired then to the garage again to have it retested and drive home before I can renew the insurance. Is that OK
A
I am sure your insurers will reinsure you on the condition you are using it to get an mot you are not allowed to drive a car on public roads without valid insurance and you can be liable to prosecution

    Name: Ben Town: Leeds

Q
Hi, Iím in the process of making a pit bike road legal (offroad bike) and Iím just wondering if I need to fit indicators for when I get it registered. Iíve read that itís fine as long as itís an offroad bike, but then it would only pass a "daylight MOT" and Iíd have to remove or tape over the front/rear lights or something and that I could ride the bike on the road just as long as itís in daylight and no at night, is this true??
A
your bike has to have all lights or no lights, and it doesnt need a horn, mirrors or indicators either for a daylight mot. but it does need a full size number plate

Q
Do you require a rear brake light if you only have a daylight mot?

I have just received a £50 ticket from a policeman for not having one.
A
There is a link to the MOT manual at the end of statement which will take you to the page with it on Stop lamps are not required to be fitted to vehicles used only during the hours of daylight, which are fitted with neither front nor rear position lamps, etc. (See 1.1.A). http://www.ukmot.com/mot%20manual/index.asp?MOT=Stop Lamps&MOT_Number=1.2&MOT_Section=lights

rear light
    Name: Donna Town: Biggleswade

Q
My partner has a bandit 1200 it has just failed itís MOT due to the rear headlight being a LED style with the indicators included on the main unit. If the main light is switched on and the indicator is activated it does dull the red beam but half still stays illuminated once indicator is switched off the red beam is restored straight away. Is this correct in it failing as the light also specifies it is road legal.

Kind regards

Donna
A
Reason for rejection. A lamp which is adversely affected by the operation of another lamp is cause for rejection hence the failure the fact that switching on the main beam causes the red lamp to dull is the problem
Motorcycle indicators
    Name: Alan Town: Blackpool

Q
Hi, does a Q plate motorbike need indicators to pass an MOT? It has never had them but I donít wont a daytime MOT.
A
Indicators must be fitted to a motorcycle and emit only orange light They must flash on and off, not just dim and brighten They must flash between 60 and 120 times per minute They must be visible when riding or have a functioning idiot light They must be securely fitted and so must the switch They must not be adversely affected by the operation of another lamp or the horn Bikes which cannot exceed 30mph or off-road bikes designed to carry just the rider do not need indicators

Q
My car had an advisory on insecure headlights but I did not get to have it repaired. It passed MOT despite that at the same main dealer. Do I still have to repair, the light is tightly fixed at the top but can be pushed slightly at the bottom.
A
An advisory notice means that in the opinion of the tester that the component is likely to deteriorate but at the time of the test it was ok a good description of an advisory is that if your tyres were legal but only had enough tread for 3000 more miles before they would fail then the tester normally would give you an advisory notice
Bulb
    Name: barry Town: manchester

Q
front offside position lamp obscured more than 50% does this mean bulb needs replacing
A
If the light from the offside light does not match the light on the nearside light the tester will normally fail you it is at the testers discretion whether to pass or fail you on this issue

Q
We have these thing things on our mot advisory, slight play in both front roll bar link arm bottom bushes, and slight play in o/s/f upper suspension ball joint are these failures

Daylight MOT
    Name: neil Town: newport

Q
what does my bike need for a day time mot.as my bike has no lights
A
A daylight MOT would require a motorbike to have a horn and a rear registration plate.

machines which have neither front nor rear position lamps, or have such lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked that are:-
only used in daylight hours
not used in times of serious reduced visibility

The following items/lamps are not required to be tested in order for a MOT to pass a daylight MOT test as long as they meet the criteria above.

Front and Rear position lamps
Headlamps
Stop Lamps
Rear Reflectors
Direction Indicators
Stickers
